SocialMediaTax: Coming soon to a country near you-  A despondent wave of social media tax is blowing through Africa. It is a wave that has to be stopped in its track. On July 1, 2018, in Uganda, a tax imposed on social media use because of The Excise Duty Amendment Act 2018 in the East African country came into force. In a bid to control what the government deemed ‘’gossip’’, citizens are now mandated to pay 200 Ugandan shillings ($0.05) per day of use for 60 mobile apps, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and WhatsApp. In a year, this fee totals about $19 in a country with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per Capita of $604.

Uganda’s President Museveni set for life presidency after court ruling

A lawyer for a group of Ugandan opposition leaders has warned that President Yoweri Museveni, 73, is heading for a “life presidency” after a court upheld a constitutional amendment scrapping presidential age limits.
